Sue E. Manning

October 10, 1932 - January 17, 2016

DWIGHT — Sue Ellen Jericho Manning, 83, of Channahon, formerly of Dwight, passed away Sunday (Jan. 17, 2016) at Joliet Hospice Home after a courageous battle with ovarian cancer. She is survived by her husband, John Edwin Manning, Channahon; daughter, Peggy Sue (Dennis) Esser, DeForest, Wis.; son, Timothy John (Janel) Manning, Minooka; daughter, Dr. Kelly Ann (Paul) Manning-Smith, Channahon; six grandchildren, Amanda Smith, Matt and Jessica (Smith) Lauterbach, Joseph and Carissa Smith, and Allyssa Smith; four great-granddaughters, Ella, Madison, Morgan and Cheyenne; sisters, Mary Maisel and Nina (Bill) Rigsby, all of Arizona; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Helen “Lucille” Jericho, and a sister, Lois Fitzgerald. Sue was born Oct. 10, 1932, in Oswego. She graduated from Aurora High School in 1950. Sue’s passion in life was to be a caregiver, and those that knew her well know she was a child at heart. She is remembered for the many years she spent on the playgrounds with children at Dwight Elementary. She never missed a basketball game and was fondly nicknamed “Bernie” by the boys' basketball team as their No. 1 fan. Her Girl Scout troops remember the camp-out antics and how Sue led the fun. Family and friends know she was always there in times of need and tended many bedsides of ailing friends and family. Sue’s love of children kept her close to her grandchildren and great-granddaughters, and she seemed to always have a child in her arms. Her love of laughter and sense of humor brought many joy. Many remember the joy her morning smile and goofy humor brought them across the counter at Ohlendorf's bakery in Dwight as they started their workday. Please join her family and friends in a celebration of this bright spirit from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Heritage Bluff Golf Club, 24355 W. Bluff Road, Channahon, IL 60410. A private interment will be held at Lincoln Memorial Veterans Cemetery, Elwood. Memorials to the Joliet Area Community Hospice or the University of Chicago Cancer Research Foundation would be appreciated. Arrangements are Intrusted to The Maple Funeral Home & Crematory Channahon, IL.
